Thermography

What is Thermography?

The human body has a very specific temperature pattern. Changes in this pattern, as a result of inflammation or disease, can be detected using thermal imaging. Thermography or Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is a non-invasive screening tool that uses a specialized camera to measure extremely subtle temperature changes on the skin’s surface that correlate physiologically to underlying dysfunction or pathology.

While other screening tools, such as mammography, MRI and ultrasound are only able to identify structural abnormalities (such as a tumor at least pea-sized), DITI looks for FUNCTIONAL abnormalities (the process that occurs before a tumor grows). It is an adjunctive/supportive screening tool and is not a replacement for diagnostic tools but can provide crucial information on the origin of symptoms as well as identify pre-disease states resulting in early diagnosis. Research shows that thermal imaging can detect some cancers 8-10 years before they are visible on mammogram therefore allowing the golden opportunity for preventative treatments.

In addition, DITI can be significant in differentiating the origin of pain anywhere in the body whether neurologial, muscle, bone or cardiovascular providing more information for effective treatments.

There is no radiation, no skin contact and no discomfort. DITI is useful in ANY condition. There are no contraindications and can be safely performed on any one. For best results imaging should be repeated 3 months after the initial scan to establish an individual baseline then once per year thereafter.

Disclaimer:  Breast Thermal imaging is an adjunct (complement) test to other primary breast screening and diagnostic imaging studies such as Mammography, MRI, or Ultrasound. Patients should follow the recommendations of their primary healthcare provider for routine screening as well as for diagnostic imaging and/or additional work-up.

SIBO

WHAT IS SIBO?

SIBO (pronounced “see-bo”) is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth – in essence, an overgrowth of “good” bacteria in the wrong place.
These bacteria should predominately reside in our large intestine/colon. SIBO is actually a motility disorder in which the good bacteria are able to migrate up from the large intestine into the small intestine or are not effectively moved down into the colon when taken in as a supplement or food. A process called the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) is responsible for “street cleaning” the small intestine. Also called the “cleansing wave”, the MMC creates a current that washes debris down and keeps bacteria in the colon.
For multiple reasons (poor diet of refined/ processed food, medications, etc.) this process stops allowing debris to collect and bacteria to migrate to the small intestine. The small intestine is not equipped to handle a significant growth of these bacteria as in the large intestine. When they migrate to the small intestine they are closer to a food source (as it comes through the stomach). They consume “food” (in the form of sugars – glucose, lactose and fructose), multiply, release hydrogen and/or methane gas, as well as endotoxins. This leads to small intestine damage resulting in malabsorption, inflammation, leaky gut syndrome, digestive symptoms and likely systemic symptoms.

HOW IS SIBO TREATED?

SIBO is a fixable MOTILITY disorder.  Most practitioners treat SIBO through three stages:

  1. Eradicate the bacteria in the small intestine
  2. Repair the motility function/MMC
  3. Heal the gut through a specific diet and supportive nutrients

I have treated SIBO for over 10 years.  What I have found in this time is that simply focusing on “SIBO” does not provide long-term resolution.  But understanding WHY SIBO is there in the first place is KEY!   My question always remains: What has gone wrong in the natural terrain to allow it to take hold and become a problem?  By addressing the microbiome dysfunction that allowed these bacteria to overgrow in the first place is imperative to having long-term results.  In addition, I have learned that another crucial aspect in successfully addressing  SIBO is to prioritize gut healing vs “killing bad bugs”.  The gut wants nothing more than to be healed and soothed.  That’s not to say I don’t use herbal antimicrobials in my approach.  I have just found we have better and more long-term results when we focus on regenerating the gut lining from the beginning!  The KEY to treating SIBO long-term is not necessarily in eradicating the bacteria in the small intestine but repairing the gut’s innate ability to heal itself!  I use a variety of tried and true specialized supplements to aid in healing from the beginning of treatment. This is often where the true healing and improved food tolerance begins!

In addition, I have found a strong connection of SIBO to Gastritis.  Gastritis is inflammation of the stomach lining and is prevalent in most of my SIBO clients – whether they know it or not.  Even “mild gastritis” as uncovered on many endoscopy exams is overlooked and not even reported to the client by their doctor.  To overlook and under-treat gastritis leads to a less successful long-term result in treating SIBO!

What are symptoms of SIBO?

  • Gas and Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal Pain or Cramping
  • Reflux
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome/IBS

  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Neurological conditions such as vertigo and seizures
  • Poor immune functioning
